The Regents' Scholarship was created in March 2008. The scholarship awards students who complete a defined core course of study during high school. All courses for the Regents' Scholarship requirements must be completed during grades 9-12. In other words, all required courses must appear on a high school or college transcript and courses taken in grades 7 and 8 will not satisfy scholarship requirements.

Please note: Students are currently allowed to complete any outstanding course work during the summer after they have graduated. However; all course work must be completed by September 1 of their high school graduation year. The scholarship is available to Utah high school graduates that continue their education at an institution of higher education in Utah. Students should apply for the scholarship during their senior year of high school. The scholarship application will become available in November and is due February 1, 2009 with a priority deadline of January 5, 2009.

The Regents' Scholarship is a two tiered award system with a Base Award and an Exemplary Academic Achievement Award. The following is a summary of the scholarship requirements.

Exemplary Academic Achievement Award

A student who qualifies for the Regents' Scholarship Base Award may also be eligible for the Exemplary Academic Achievement Award equal in value up to 75%* of the cost of tuition** for up to two years of full-time enrollment or until the associate or bachelor's degree requirements have been met (whichever is shorter). In order to qualify for the Exemplary Award, a student must, in addition to the base requirements:

**If used at a private institution that is not within the Utah System of Higher Education, an Exemplary Academic Achievement Scholarship is equal in value to 75% of the tuition costs at the institution, not to exceed 75% of the average tuition costs at the institutions within the Utah System of Higher Education.

***When calculating the cumulative grade point average, additional weights may be given to Advanced Placement, pre-International Baccalaureate, International Baccalaureate, and concurrent enrollment classes.

Utah Educational Savings Plan Supplemental Award

The Regents' Scholarship also encourages college savings. A student who qualifies for the Regents' Scholarship may also receive a college savings plan supplemental award of up to $400. The supplemental award is based on yearly contributions to the student's Utah Educational Savings Plan Trust account. In order to receive this award a student must:
  1. Meet the qualifications for the Regents' Scholarship
  2. Have a Utah Educational Savings Plan Trust account with the student named as the beneficiary with a contribution during the students 14, 15, 16, 17 year of age. (A contribution of $100 during the students 14, 15, 16 and 17 year of age, will maximize the supplemental award.)
