Financial Aid Topics

Q.

What happens after the FAFSA is filed?

A.

When you use FAFSA on the Web, you can get immediate acknowledgement that your information has be received by the U.S. Department of Education. Then, by the next day usually, you will get an online response with your EFC (Expected Family Contribution), and notice that the information has been sent to the schools you selected.

After processing the electronic FAFSA, the Department of Education will send you a Student Aid Report. You will also be able to view your SAR data online.

The college(s) that you list on the FAFSA will receive an electronic copy of your SAR containing your EFC and the information you provided on the FAFSA. The financial aid office at the college(s) may contact you for additional information regarding your application for aid or advise you when to expect a financial aid award offer.

Q.

Should I keep a copy of the SAR?

A.

Yes. It is a good idea to access your SAR information online and to print a copy for your records. It's also recommended that you start a file folder or binder of all important papers related to your college admission and financial aid applications. Keep copies of your Student Aid Report, a copy of any additional documents that you might have supplied to the college financial aid office, and any correspondence with the federal processor, the campus financial aid office, or other financial aid or scholarship agencies.

Important things to remember:
  • Over your December school break, get online at www.fafsa.ed.gov and review the FAFSA. Become familiar with the information you will need to complete it.
  • File your FAFSA as soon as possible after January 1.
  • Respond promptly to all requests for additional information you receive about your FAFSA, your SAR, state grants and scholarships, and your application to each college.
  • Keep a copy of all applications and documents you file.
